I'm often asked about detoxing, usually how to detox, what to use, and more recently, how to detox without having to hit the porcelain throne every five minutes.
There's not an easy answer to this as to detox legit means "to rid the body of toxic substances" i.e "to shit". If it's not coming out the back, it's coming out the front, or the skin. Those are the main ways the body detoxifies itself when we're purposely want to "do a detox".
Getting back to the question at hand here, can you detox less aggressively? That's hard to answer as well because we're all different and while coffee gives me the runs it makes some of my friends constipated. #yay! I know I'm not seeming like much help here but bare with me. While I can't really determine how to slow things down for you during a detox, I can give you some tips and tricks you can utilize on a day-to-day basis that slowly introduces your body to the healthy/(ier) life. Even still, you will start to "go" more often, because being frank, you need to be shittin. On the regular. Like as many times as you eat in a day regular. All of y'all not going for days and days - just know it's all getting packed up in you somewhere if it ain't comin out. More room on the out than the in is what my granddaddy used to say. Just sayin...
That being said, give these things a go (haha - that wasn't intentional I promise):
Drink 2 cups of water with a squirt of lemon juice first thing when you wake up. I mean like, right when you realize you're awake before you've wiped the crust outcho eyeballs. Please don't complain to me about drinking water. You have no issues throwing back those mojitos, margs, and shots, so toughen up, buttercup. In about 10 minutes, you'll know it's working. Wake up early enough to not have to worry about if you need to hop of the train to find the nearest Starbucks (if you're in Chicago anyway).
Eat more fruits and veggies. Whatever you already eat, add in some fresh freggies. If you eat meatloaf, sneak in some chopped kale and mushrooms in the mix. Spaghetti? mix in some fresh arugula for a pop of color, some vitamin A, folate, and vitamin C. Still eating packs of Oodles n' Noodles aka ramen noodles? Sautee up some onion, garlic, and ginger for some zing then toss in two handfuls of spinach...can you tell I've done this before...? Be creative and find ways to sneak fresh good ass for you grub into the stuff you already love to eat.
Have a green smoothie. Them greens are the real MVP's of detoxification. They are amazing at this because of the fiber (among other fab stuff like folate, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals) feeding the gut microbes to improve digestion and waste removal. If you haven't scooped up my detox smoothie recipes, it's a great place to start.
Like I said, you aren't doo-doo proof, but slowly incorporating one or all of these things will help you to detoxify more gently than say, a full on juice feast or straight up switching your diet from meat only to all veggies.
Let me know if you try any of these and let me know how it goes/went in the comments below!
